About Our Name

Te Kupenga o Manukau
Kupenga - Māori, Cook Islands and Tongan word for 'net'
Kupega in Niue
Upega in Samoan
Upena in Hawaiian

Netting is a communal fishing operation and its success depends on the collective efforts of the individuals involved.

The concept for the logo comes from a Tongan saying:
Tākanga 'e nau fohe.
'Together are their oars'.

The accompanying whakatauki Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari taku toa he toa takitini conveys 'Unity is our strength'.

The literal translation is 'My valour is not that of the individual but that of the multitude - no-one can survive alone'.
